Eco-Friendly Backrest Redesign in 2022
In 2022, we initiated a redesign for the eco-friendly backrest, adding three adjustable positions.
Adjustable Angles for Optimal Comfort
The new backrest can be adjusted to three distinct angles, these angles support various activities like working, reading, and resting:
- Upright (105°)
- Relaxed (120°)
- Reclined (135°)
Lumbar and Headrest Support for Personalized Comfort
A lumbar pillow was included to provide support for different users’ back shapes and sizes. Additionally, we incorporated a headrest pillow that can be adjusted or removed according to user comfort.
Sustainable and Non-Toxic Materials
We decided to stay with Medex for its sustainability and ensured that all finishes and adhesives used are non-toxic and environmentally friendly. We prioritized durability by selecting materials with a long lifespan, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
Improved Adjustability with User-Friendly Strap
We improved the adjustability by replacing our previous screw-in format with a user-friendly adjustable strap, making it simpler to change the backrest positions.

Our backrest chair has a solid track record of superior design capabilities and environmental stewardship around the world, made from Medex, which is an eco-friendly Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). This material is non-toxic and Forest Stewardship Council Certified, with no added formaldehyde. To that we add a non-toxic, whey-based finish called Vermont Natural Coatings Furniture Finish. How Does the Eco Backrest Work?
The Eco Backrest is a simple way to relax your entire body, allowing it to rest in a position called ‘spine nuetral’. This position is as restful as laying down, yet with the Eco Backrest you can still do activities like working on a laptop, reading, playing with children and hanging out with friends. This is a way to restore your energy without taking a nap.
About The Eco Backrest Design
The Eco Backrest is composed of several peices that can be put together and taken apart quickly. This makes it versatile to be used in many ways. The front comprises of a long cushion, divided into two parts: a long trapaziodal cushion for the back, and a small rectangular section for the seat. This cushion ties on to the back frame with straps which supports the back and two protruding “fins” that support the frame to sit upright. The fins are held together with a crossbar. The fins are adjustable, giving the Eco Backrest the option to placed in different lounge positions.

How Many Positions Are There?
The Eco Backrest has four front facing upright positions. There are six screw holes in the back support. The fins can be placed either in the top and middle holes, or the middle and bottom holes. This gives you two angles. For the other two angles, use these screw holes, but flip the fin upside down. Simply adjust the fin piece to the desired angle. The four angles give options for relaxation, reading, laptop work, or meditation support.
The Eco Backrest has numerous other possibilities if you take off the fins completely and lay it down. You can lean it against something, or place an Eco Cube under the back support for working or reading on your stomach. Laying flat it easily becomes a massage table prop.

How Easy Is It To Change Positions?
Changing the positions of the fins on the back support takes a few minutes, but it not hard. No tools are needed. Simply unscrew the thumb screws and lift the fin assemble to the desired position and rescrew the thumb screws.
Can I Use Eco Backrests Instead Of A Couch?
The Eco Backrest works great for group seating, and have the added benefit of being modular and portable. They are sturdy, supportive chairs designed for comfort first.

I’ve had the Eco Backrest for 5 or 6 years now. The kapok has compressed some, but an occasional fluff and “beat” keeps it supportive.
Sitting in this chair is drastically better for my spine than a conventional recliner or sofa, and I have virtually no back pain even after an hour or two.
The adjustable reclining angle makes for a versatile seat and allows me to alternate how gravity is vectoring through my body. I also like that I can vary my leg/hip position as needed. I use a bolster under the knees or cross legged with yoga blocks under the thighs for support (buckwheat yoga blocks are perfect). Often I place my feet flat on the floor drawn in close to the seat – really opens low back. I can take the angle adjustment off altogether and lay it down on some pillows, bolsters, blocks, etc and get horizontal either supine or prone.
Finally, I love the energetics of the EM whey finish on the wood.
I am an alignment based body worker and I highly recommend this for anyone with spine issues, or wants to avoid them.

The Carolina Morning Eco Backrest lounge chair is haven of comfort and relaxation.
As a person who’s been managing chronic pain for many years, I chose this chair because its ergonomic design. The adjustable backrest allows me to find the perfect position, cradling my body and minimizing tension. With multiple levels of recline, the chair allows me to either sit upright or lounge at various positions.
